T20 finals day review

T20 finals day review

George Bezani27 May 2022 - 15:30

Wow what a day

What a day of great cricket. We had it all….sunshine, big sixes, wickets, unbelievable fielding and even a crowd catch or two.

The first semi-final kicked off at 10:00am with Oxfordshire taking on Cheshire. Oxfordshire were restricted to 156 off their twenty overs and Cheshire were looking comfortable at 92/2 off 12 overs before they capitulated, and the last seven wickets fell for just 21 runs. They ended up on 136 leaving them 20 runs short. The bowling accolades go to Ollie Currill from Oxfordshire with the figures of 7-12 off his 4 overs.

The second semi-final was more straightforward with Cambridgeshire taking on Dorset. Dorset were restricted to 133/5 off their twenty overs with the spin of Callum Guest with 2-12 off 4 overs stifling the Dorset batting. Cambridgeshire paced their chase perfectly with 17-year-old Noah Thain, getting 39 not out and Cambridgeshire winning by 6 wickets with 9 balls to spare.

So, onto the final Oxfordshire v Cambridgeshire. There are many battles between these two, most notably the boat race and the varsity match at Twickenham, however this contest stood up with the best of them.

Cambridgeshire opened and posted the highest score of the day (so far) of 169 with Jack Potticary hitting a half century with 58. Pick of the Oxfordshire bowlers was James Coles with 3-14. Oxfordshire were set a target of 170 and some big hitting from Harrison Ward with 84 from 63 balls, aided by Jonathan Cater 31 and Ollie Currill 19 brought them home with 4 balls to spare.

Oxfordshire were crowned NCCA T20 champions for 2022!

We would like to say a massive thanks to the supporters of all teams who came from all over the country to be at TPCC and indeed to our own members who came out to enjoy a feast of cricket.

We would also like to say thanks to Simon Wastling for keeping us informed on the PA and DJ Carlos ( and DJ Deric) for the booming sounds that accompanied wickets, boundary’s and between the overs (apologies to the residents of Station Road for the early start!).

We are lucky at TPCC to have so many great members who give up their time to volunteer their time to make an event like this, run as smoothly as it did. We had over twenty people help on Sunday, and we owe a great debt to them to enable us to host this great event. A humble thank you to you all.

On the day, the following gave up their time: Toby, Jake & Stuart Seagrave, Charlie Elliott, Ali and Matt Partner, James Darraugh, Barbara Bezani, Andy and Rory Criddle, Carl and Anna Stokes, Simon and Toby Wastling, Andy Morgan , Duncan Marriott, Nick Wake , Greg Burns, Stuart Quilliam, Andy Dixon , Chris Curry , Benn Kempster, Josh Camm, Dan Plumeridge , John Graham , Steve Gurnett, Dick Highton , Mark Bater and Deric Newman.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t be there on the day due to other commitments, but a big thank you to Guy Masters also did a lot of pre event work.

We would also like to thank Suzanne, Rene and their team for running the pavilion bar, BBQ and providing the lunches for the teams, officials and volunteers. Also, Adam Phillips for running the outdoor bar. Finally, a big thank you to David Doyle and his team for providing a fantastic wicket and indeed the whole ground. It is noted that almost 900 runs were scored on the day!

Who knows when we will host such an event again and if we do, make sure you book the date in your diary and enjoy a fantastic day out.

Andrew Grout, Peter Darraugh and George Bezani
