It was a story of what might have been for Mark Bater’s Third Team as they were beaten at Beaconsfield last weekend. After being bowled out for 118, Beaconsfield chased the total five wickets down.

Bater won the toss and decided to bat first with the target of scoring 200+ and registering double batting points. The plan was soon in tatters as the Beaconsfield opening bowlers reduced the Third Team top order to 25-5. The former Bessborough pair of James Wheeler and Ian Ridley dug in and fought back with a partnership of over 50 with resolute defence, a bit of luck and punishing the odd bad ball that they received.

Wheeler's form has improved in recent weeks and he drove the ball well and once again scored a majority of his runs between point and third man by opening the face. He battled hard and was disappointed when he was caught at point for 33 off the bowling of Denzil Owen. Ridley also fought hard, and he made a battling 32 before he was clean bowled by Beaconsfield captain Andy Peace.

Star allrounder Chris Curry (pictured) batted at number eight and he was the only other Third Team batsman to make double figures and he made 12 before being dismissed by Sam Musk. Eventually the Third Team were bowled out for 118 inside 42 overs.

With early wickets needed, Bater gave the new ball to Curry and he proceeded to dismiss the Beaconsfield opening batsmen Odera and Sharif with only 25 runs on the board. The delivery to dismiss Sharif was a world class delivery that pitched on leg stump and hit the top of the off stump. The club’s leading wicket-taker Toby Seagrave was then into the action and he dismissed Chris Kaye LBW for 10.

Beaconsfield’s number four Andrew Keen decided the best approach was to attack everything and he smashed his way to 51 and took the game away from the Third Team. Curry was brought back into the attack and he picked up a further two wickets to finish with 4-43 as Beaconsfield won by five wickets.
