U13A Championship

A lovely evening and the team was on the front pitch with plenty of spectators watching from the Pavilion.

We always have a good game against our friends from Langleybury and tonight was no exception.

Patrick was captain for the day and won the toss and we decided to field for a change to see how we chase a target.

We started well with very tight bowling and after 10 overs Langleybury were 50/2. In came their gun player Fraser who went at our bowling attack.

Some wayward bowling and great play from Langleybury led to them scoring off the last 10 overs meaning a target of 150 which was going to be very challenging.

In keeping with the ethos of how we approach the Championship games everyone bowled two overs.

Unfortunately we gave away too many extras ...43 in total including 25 wides which is far too many. Bowling figures can be found on the score sheet linked at the bottom.

Then came the chase which was always going to be hard.

We were ahead of the game until the 15th over with some great batting from Jacob H, Tom PW and Ben W all retired. With the target at 26 off the last two overs, Langleybury brought back two of their best bowlers and Patrick M who hit 23 and was only out dancing down the wicket in the pursuit of quick runs.

It left Rhys and Ben B the tough target of 18 off the last over which after some good running brought it down to 13 needed off the last three when Ben B hit a six to leave 7 needed off the last two. Unfortunately the bowler went into IPL mode and bowled two nice balls outside off stump which Ben could not connect with.

All in all a great game which went down to the wire.

Things to improve on would be bowling straight. 25 wides means we are giving them extra overs. Also the field positioning. It was notable when we needed boundaries Langleybury flooded the rope with players in the right places. We often had too many on the off side and too few on the on side meaning easy boundaries for the Langleybury team.

However we hope they can learn from these mistakes which will take the team from just losing to winning.

We are still top of the league with only one defeat so as long as we do well in our last two matches we have a good chance of getting to the last 8.

Match highlights three sixes from Tring with Ben Westcott, Tom PW and Ben Bezani all getting one each.

Here is the scorecard.

One thing to note is that I got one of Jacks overs wrong and incorrectly attributed that to Hannah. Unfortunately I cannot alter it however their figures are as follows

Hannah 2 overs 0/15
Jack 2 overs 1/29
