Tring Park CC U13 Girls v Berkhamsted CC U13 Girls

Tring Park, 26 June 2017, 6PM

Tring team: Natalie Gurnett, Abbie Osbourne, Emma Rouse (WK), Millie Sawh (C), Abi Marsh (WK), Rachel Dallas, Francesca Lainé, Rosie Cave, Catherine Reeves, Sophia Miles

Since our last match several of the girls had been on winning form for Tring school, lifting the county cup, so they were full of confidence coming into this final home match of the season. The opponents were local rivals Berkhamsted, and both sides were fielding good teams with county players. Tring’s confidence was further boosted by former coach James making a guest umpiring appearance. It was Millie’s turn to captain the side.

Berkhamsted won the toss and put Tring into bat. Natalie and Abbie opened the batting and played calmly, keeping the scoreboard moving. Abbie hit a four to help Tring reach 221 after four overs. Emma and captain Millie took over and also played steadily, finishing on 241 after eight overs. Abi and Rachel were next but were up against one of Berkhamsted’s best bowlers and Abi was unlucky to be bowled first ball. She recovered quickly and they both played sensibly to push the score on to 255/1 after 12 overs. During the next four overs, Chesky and Rosie also fell victim to the same player who bowled Chesky and caught Rosie, who had been batting very well. Tring were on 262/3 after 16 overs. Catherine and Sophia were last and added 25 runs to the score without losing a wicket so Tring finished on 287/3.

Tring knew that their total was defendable but they would have to bowl and field well. Natalie and Abbie bowled well enough but good batting from Berkhamsted saw them hit 2 boundaries through gaps in the field. Tring quickly adjusted their field and plugged the gaps. Abbie had an excellent second over and claimed a wicket with her last ball. Emma and Millie then had their best bowling spells of the season, limiting Berkhamsted to just 230/1 after 8 overs. Rachel and Abi continued the run of good bowling to keep frustrating the batters. Excellent fielding was also in evidence as Tring stopped anything reaching the boundary and twice came within inches of a run out. Chesky and Rosie bowled next with Rosie bowling her best spell of the season, claiming a wicket with a great delivery in her last over.

Berkhamsted were now on 260/2 with four overs left, just 2 runs behind what Tring’s score had been at the same point of the first innings. There was everything to play for in the last four overs and Berkhamsted had saved their best player for the final run chase. Berkhamsted needed 28 runs to win, or 7 runs an over. Tring had fielded and bowled well so far but now they needed to be at their best to win the match.

Catherine bowled the 17th over and looked to have bowled out the batsman, but the delivery was a little too high so the umpire called a no-ball. The reprieved batsman then hit a good shot and Berkhamsted attempted to run 2, but some fine fielding from Natalie resulted in a run out and an important wicket for Tring. Berkhamsted would now need 30 runs from 3 overs. Sophia bowled next, making her first appearance for the U13s, and was unlucky not to claim a wicket when the ball was hit up and didn’t quite carry despite Catherine’s diving attempt to make the catch. Catherine was still lying on the ground when she spotted that the batter on strike had stayed out of her crease and she threw the ball at the stumps to claim Tring’s second run-out in two overs. Berkhamsted’s chances of victory had now faded as they needed 31 runs from the last 12 deliveries, and Catherine and Sophia completed their last overs without any drama to cement victory for Tring.

Result:

Tring Park CC 287/3 (20.0 overs)
Berkhamsted CC 268/4 (20.0 overs)
Tring won by 19 runs.

This was a close game that could have gone either way in the last few overs. In the end it was hard work in the field that won it for Tring. The girls were alert for every delivery and many balls were stopped from reaching the boundary by firm hands or determined chasing. Abi and Emma took turns behind the wicket and both did an excellent job, with smart backing up by all the team. Throwing was also good and Berkhamsted were always needing to be wary of being run out. A great all-round team performance to claim a win in the last home game of the season.
